Community
Our community is to act to decarbonize maritime travel by using the power of the wind
SANT’AGATA
it’s 4000 miles in 2024
14 countries, 25 crew members on board
Be a Crew Member
Being a crew member means participating in the functions of the sailboat at any time in the physical limits and the knowledge. It means being responsible for others and ourselves. It means accepting to live in a community during the voyage. It means coming up with motivation and transforming it into energy.
The crew will need to keep watch. If we are, for example, eight crew members plus me, I will make up three groups where every group will have a mission of eight hours: the first group will rest, the second one will cater and finally third one will steer the boat and care about the proceedings.
Aventure Nature Health Sport
Sailing is not easy! Lowering, hoisting, trimming the sails, holding the helm: so many actions that use the body and increase energy expenditure. Fun dimension in addition! »
It reduces cardiovascular risks. The technical gestures and maneuvers to be performed work all the muscles of the body. Exposure to the marine environment also improves certain atopic pathologies such as asthma. The sail is also beneficial for balance, we will constantly work deep muscles to manage our balance. ». Adventure and travel have an Anti-anxiety dimension. The social character participate to the mental health.
Safety on board
Sant’Agata has all the equipment for an offshore navigation.
Still, a boat remains a complex machine and sailing is an activity with risk factors. Even if often these are little injuries, you need to be careful, vigilant and in good health. There could be malfunctions, mechanical failures and electric problems. It is important to not take risks and ask me before doing an action. In a boat like this every action has consequences.
The Ship
The Sant’Agata is 107 years old today, it is a gaff ketch of 63 feet long able to receive 25 people aboard. Previously the training ship of the maritime school Soon Sjøskole.
Old gaff rig
Navigation on an old gaff rigger is very playful, simple, clear, and physical. There are no complicated things in the handling of the boat and hoisting the sails.
The complicated thing is to make the best out of every allure of the boat, this needs a minimum of experience to understand the direction of the wind under sails.
Saloon
With its 2 meters 40 centimeters headroom and 5 meters large the saloon is very comfortable, on the side there are eight berths and arrangements. The Sant’Agata is an old school boat, so everything is made to be easy to use.
A sailing boat for the northern seas
The Sant’Agata has evolved since his construction in 1917. Cargo boat, charter and finally a school boat, it benefited from many improvements. For example, a double copper shell for the ices. The wheelhouse and the machines room are separate from the living area.
Daily Sant'Agata
July 13th, Santander (Spain)
The adventure starts in Norway, in the small town of Moss during the month of December 2023. The winter conditions with a North-East flow are favorable and open us the route to the South. Expert advice is provided by Jan Steven Johannesen, former Olympic coach of the Norwegian national sailing team, who helps us to prepare the sailing route and trains me in crew management.
The challenge is not that complicated: there are 4000 nautical miles and 5 seas ahead of us to reach Sicily and a starting point with temperatures around -20 you just have to be very well prepared.
With the help of my first mate Clara, I build two teams: one team onshore and exclusively Norwegian who would provide us with logistics, and a second team aboard, the crew, brave enough to handle a gaff ketch in the North Sea in mid-winter. This is how I meet Nicolas, Flavio, Magalie, Clara et Andrei who will be the first crew members, sailing away from Moss on December 13th. To be continued...
Word from the Captain
I chose this sailboat for its sailing program, its seaworthiness, its crew facilities. It is a safe all-weather sailboat that allows for a multitude of activities on board. The Sant'Agata is my 4th sailboat and the most accomplished. This year of working aboard with the crew was very intense and enriching, often hard. I appreciated the value of each one, which reinforced my choice of this sailboat.
Traditional sailing and navigation must remain a human adventure and I will strive to continue on this path. The art of living aboard Sant’AgataOur philosophy here is very simple : be independent. Go away at any time, join us in all parts of the world, use the power of the wind and help each over. I await that state of mind from each of you. .
Rules on board
The crew is obligated to comply with safety and environmental regulations.
The crew confirms their voluntary participation in the voyage of the ketch Sant’Agata, fully understanding and accepting the associated risks of sailing on a sports vessel, along with the responsibility for their life, health, and personal belongings.
Before the voyage commences, the crew undertakes to provide a valid travel document (passport or ID) for the entire duration of the journey and necessary visas as required for the specified route.
The crew affirms their physical fitness and the absence of any health-related restrictions for sailing on a sports vessel.
The crew holds independent responsibility for navigating customs and ensuring compliance with customs regulations.
The crew agrees not to bring or store firearms, hazardous objects, drugs, or alcohol on board.
The crew independently bears the costs associated with their stay on board and expenses for traveling to and from the ship’s location.
The Captain retains the right to disembark a crew member for violations of these rules, gross breaches of discipline, or any act threatening the safety of any individual on the ship, irrespective of the ship’s current location.

Marine values
Humility, sharing, mutual help, and heritage are the fundamental values on Sant'Agata. We respect nature and are kind with sea-faring folk. We help others in difficulty and respect their differences so that the sea is easier and better understood. Our goal is to convey these values so that they last.
